Web Reviews - Food Studies Syllabus

Website Review #1 – Health Promotion Board Singapore: http://www.hpb.gov.sg/

The HPB website provides abundant educational materials & resources as well as learning tools for students. The useful information that can be found which relates closely to Food Studies would be the Singapore Healthy Diet Pyramid, Recommended Daily Dietary Allowances and The Dietary Guidelines. There is also a Health Tool which calculates the energy and nutrient composition of foods in just seconds. In addition, DigiTools featuring cooking demonstrations and E-Supermart make learning through this website becomes more enjoyable.

I would say that this is the most reliable source of information with regards to food information; as there is no question about the credibility, reliability or authenticity of the website. In this website, we see an extensive influx of information that covers a wide range of topics – food, health, diseases & conditions to other non-food related such as pregnancy & parenting, mental health and oral care. Thus, much filtering of information needs to be done as the website provides lots of coverage on other topics that may be irrelevant to Food Studies.

Website Review #2 – UNL Food: Food, Nutrition & Health Educational Resources: http://food.unl.edu/web/fnh/educational-resources

This website is another useful resource site that has an extensive scope of topics covering Food Studies. From food, nutrition, health etc, this site also touches on topics such as food safety, food commodities, as well as meal planning.

The website provides many useful links to other resources, so much so that I found it hard not to divert to the other pages. Even so, I found this site very relevant and up-to-date; with many newly researched data that is hardly found on other sites. The text is clearly written and laid out; with the ability to reach out to readers easily. In short, the website is easily navigated around and it is easy to find information through the navigators.

I would strongly recommend this useful site for anyone taking Food Studies; as much of the topics covered can be found here. It is a wholesome resource site that is also recommended for anyone interested in food & nutrition.

Website Review #3 – Food Safety Education: http://www.ava.gov.sg/FoodSector/FoodSafetyEducation

This website is tuned to cater to the issues related to food safety – such as its importance and how to keep food safe from contamination.

This would be a good resource site for Food Studies students as the topic on Food Safety would be more or less covered in whole here. There is a food safety chart found in the website as well as food safety tips according to food groups.

As Food Safety is a minor component of the Food Management topic, it gives quite a good coverage with straight forward content that can be easily read and understood. I would also strongly recommend this resource site for our students as it is a local website so it would be more relevant and the information would be more catered towards the Singapore context.

Website Review #4 – Eggs – How to Cook & Egg Recipes: http://whatscookingamerica.net/eggs.htm

This site is a wholesome resource for Food Studies students who would like to cover the syllabus on eggs.It has a variety of sections – nutritional content, uses, how to tell if it’s fresh, how it should be stored and how to cook them. Most of the information is fed within one page, so not much navigating is needed to look for the information. The egg topic is more or less covered in this website and additional information (on egg sizes and raw/boiled eggs) to add on knowledge is also available for reading.

Website Review #5 – Recipes and Information on Great Tasting New Zealand Vegetables: http://www.vegetables.co.nz/

Do not be deceived by the name of this website. A tour of the website awed me by the extensive information of all the different types of vegetables – classification, nutrients, cooking methods, recipes, purchasing (selecting, buying and storing), and many other useful information on vegetables in particular.

This website also presents educational materials such as a variety of booklets featuring healthy guides, and suitable vegetables for babies & children, among others; as well as other useful resources such as online interactive learning tool and activity kits.

As vegetables is covered as a food commodity topic in Food Studies, it can be used as a study guide with regards to the related topic and with the broad spectrum of information provided, I believe students as well as teachers will find this website a very constructive resource for learning.

why it can be useful to have good drawing skills

The first lesson of the Home Economics Curriculum & Evaluation module was quite a breeze. No cheesy get-to-know sessions and no weird introductions required.

A question was flashed on the screen and we were asked- what Home Economics means to us; ideas to be presented in the form of pictures.

I wonder which part of the sentence we missed, cos we started drawing a flow chart instead. Well anyway, good thing li whey added some pictures here and there.

As the other groups presented their works, to be frank i was paying more attention to the beautiful sketches and illustrations instead... and thinking, these people sure can draw.

So generally everyone had the basically same idea of what Home Economics mean to them. Cooking, sewing, money management, health & nutrition - the list goes on. Nevertheless, whatever our thoughts are based on, what matters most is that we love & appreciate the subject and most importantly find pleasure in learning - and in future, teaching it.
